The Department of Energy (DOE) released its National Definition of a Zero Emissions Building, outlining the guidances necessary for this new energy industry standard. Climate officials attribute one-third of America’s total greenhouse gas emissions to buildings, defined as multi-unit constructions used by residents and businesses. The Energy Department has created federal standards defining what qualifies as a zero-emissions building to reduce these emissions, along with eight formal certifications buildings can receive for achieving those standards.
“With today’s announcement, DOE is helping bring clarity to our public and private sector partners to support decarbonization efforts and drive investment—paving the way for the cutting-edge clean energy technologies we need to make America’s buildings more comfortable and affordable,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
